Occupational Licensing Act 2005
Work on residential dwellings costing more than $20,000 must be managed by a CBOS-accredited building practitioner. Demolition and hazardous works require licensed contractors regardless of contract value.

Maximum deposit is capped at 5% for contracts over $20,000 (and 10% for contracts under $20,000). Builders demanding more than 5% upfront before work commences are in breach of statutory consumer standards.
